Charges laid after handgun accidently fired in classroom

Saskatoon police have laid charges against a man after a handgun was accidently discharged in a classroom last week.

Police were called to St. Peter Elementary School the morning of January 26th after the handgun was accidently fired in the back of the classroom.

An 11-year-old boy had brought the gun to the school and was showing it to his friends when it discharged.

As part of the investigation, police seized a number of long guns and another handgun from the youth’s residence.

Those guns remain in police custody.

A 43-year-old man has now been charged with three counts of careless storage of a firearm, two counts of possession of a firearm without a license and one count of possession of a prohibited device.

He is scheduled to appear in court on February 27th.

No criminal charges can be laid against the youth due to his age.
